Julia Ebner joins Franz-Stefan Gady to discuss the cycle of extremism in the wake of both the territorial defeat of ISIS and the recent Christchurch massacre.
"The military defeat of ISIS is really just one piece in the puzzle of the prevention of extremism," notes Ebner. "We shouldn't be fighting the group or single actors or even taking down (social media) accounts. That won't really solve the problem; that will be combatting the symptoms not the sources. It is really about focusing on preventing malicious actors from exploiting grievances and identity crises, from manipulating attitudes and behaviors and from hacking the minds of people."
