Michael has a B.A. from Bard College and a M.S. from New York University. Previously, he interned at both the Korea Society and the EastWest Institute in both the cyberspace cooperation and the Asia-Pacific programs. His research interests include great power rivalry, U.S.-China relations and the impact of technology on warfare and politics.

He has an elementary proficiency in Mandarin.
