U.S.-China Sanya Initiative: Report from the 9th Meeting
The EastWest Institute (EWI) brought retired American senior flag officers to meet with their Chinese counterparts in Beijing from December 15-17, 2017. This smaller-group meeting of the U.S.-China Sanya Initiative was held in coordination with the China Association for International Friendly Contact (CAIFC).
Shortly following the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, the meeting afforded a timely opportunity for substantive exchanges regarding developments on the Korean Peninsula and within the Chinese leadership. Delegates engaged in two days of discussion on critical issues impacting the U.S.-China military-to-military relationship, including North Korea, counterterrorism and other regional security challenges.
In addition to their two days of talks, the delegations also met with Admiral Miao Hua, Director of the Political Department of the Central Military Commission and Ambassador Cheng Guoping, State Commissioner for Counterterrorism and Security Matters of China. Active-duty officers from both the United States and China attended the dialogue as observers.
Since 2008, the U.S.-China Sanya Initiative has regularly brought together retired American and Chinese generals and admirals in order to build stronger military-to-military ties between the United States and China.
